New concrete may look like it meets the conditions needed for coatings, but that’s often not the case. In fact, that’s where coating failures usually begin.
Residual moisture, elevated pH, and surface residues are common in new slabs, and each one can interfere with adhesion if they aren’t identified early. Allowing the slab enough time to dry and cure, performing moisture and pH testing, and using moisture mitigation systems when results fall outside recommended thresholds all help reduce the risk of failure.
Mechanical preparation removes curing compounds, laitance, and surface residues that interfere with adhesion. When a slab cannot be further conditioned, selecting coating systems formulated to tolerate higher pH and residual moisture helps ensure proper performance.
